Natural Remedies for Overcoming Insomnia

Insomnia affects a significant proportion of the population and brings with it a range of problems including poor performance at work, general irritability and a susceptibility to accidents. Whilst it may be tempting to reach for some sort of medication that will just knock you out for the night, it is important to understand that there may some unpleasant side-effects, not to mention some degree of dependence. Therefore, many people tend to look towards natural remedies for insomnia as an alternative solution.

Most of these remedies are herbal in nature. Probably the most widely used is valerian which is actually sold in capsule form, as in its natural state the taste and smell are rather unpleasant. It is not particularly well understood how valerian works, but it has been shown to be highly effective for many people. It is generally taken about an hour before going to bed, although it can take two to three weeks to be really be effective. If you are taking other medication you should check with your doctor before using.

Other natural remedies for insomnia include lavender. This can be used by simply making up a sachet of lavender flowers which is then put under your pillow. The aroma has a soothing effect which aids sleep. In particular it can help improve the quality of your sleep, bringing about deeper sleep helping you feel more refreshed in the morning. Alternatively, there are lavender sprays available which you can simply spray over your sleeping area. Lavender can be used to make an herbal tea which if drunk shortly before going to bed is said to have a calming effect and therefore to aid sleep.

Another natural remedy is chamomile which can also be used in a spray form or as a scented candle. Again, the effect of this is a soothing and calming one, relieving stress and aiding sleep. Chamomile can also be consumed as a tea which is also reputed to assist sleep.

Natural remedies for insomnia are definitely worth considering rather than conventional medicine, as many of these have been shown to be highly effective and have fewer side effects.
