What is a Hearing Aid Dispenser?
A Hearing Aid Dispenser is a person who passes the state Hearing Aid Dispenser written and practical examination and gets a legitimate license to sell Hearing Aids to people who have impaired hearing ability.
Hearing Aid Dispensers should have the ability to understand the audiogram of the patients, to access the severity of the patient’s hearing ability, and to recommend suitable hearing aids, and do following post-fitting care.
If anyone passes the Hearing Aid Dispenser license examinations, he or she can work in an Audiologist office or can open his or her own hearing aids office. There are not many Hearing Aid Dispenser exam courses or schools. Many candidates find valuable information on the internet or from existing Hearing Aid Dispensers. Hearing aid dispensing can be a lucrative business but also requires knowledge and professionalism.
The state Hearing Aid Dispenser examination is composed in two parts, written and practical. You must first pass the written exam in order to take the practical examination.
Hearing Aid Dispensers and Audiologists are very much the same in selling hearing aids. However, the educational attainment is not the same. The minimum educational requirement of the Hearing Aid Dispenser is a high school diploma, compared to a master or doctorial degree for Audiologist. Most of the Audiologists in the United States are engaged in the clinical field of hearing, and they also can sell hearing aids if they pass the Hearing Aid Dispenser exam.
The main difference between Hearing Aid Dispenser and Audiologist is that the Audiologist can diagnose any hearing problem of the patient, while the Hearing Aid Dispenser can solely sell hearing aids to the patients with his or her own assessment. Audiologists cannot perform any physical surgery of the ears such as Tympanoplasty, Myrigotomy, and Otitis Media treatment, unlike an ENT doctor or an Otolaryngologist. In statistics, the average income for a Hearing Aid Dispenser and an Audiologist are almost the same.
Because Hearing Aid Dispensers are mainly engaged in selling hearing aids and doing post-fitting care, they are more familiar with hearing aids such as technological options, amplifications, fittings, mono and binaural fittings, wireless/bluetooth, and product knowledge.
Hearing and hearing related pathology was one of the top 10 brighter industries in 2010. As many people are getting older, Hearing Impaired members are also increasing. Hearing Aid Dispenser will be not just a demanded career, but also gradually expanding its position in coming years.
